Okafor Inspects Wreckages of Boats Destroyed by fire along Orashi River Channel

The Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Maritime Transportation, Waterways Security and Harbour Matters, Prince Dr. Henry Okafor yesterday, 30th of April, 2021, responded to a distress call about an incident which took place along Orashi river in Opuoma community of Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo State where about two (2) wooden boats suspected to be carrying crude oil caught fire.

 

 

 

Okafor who at the instance of His Excellency, Gov. Hope Uzodimma made this visit to accertain the level of environmental damage caused by the incident was accompanied by a Joint Maritime Task Force (JMTF) also made up of Men of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Police Force.

 

 

 

He condemned the illegal oil bunkering and all other illegitimate and non-state sanctioned activities going-on on the Imo waterways. Going forward, Okafor also made a case for fishermen, who had earlier petitioned his office in protestation of the adverse effect on the aquatic habitats and general ecosystem of the area occassioned by pollution arising from oil bunkering activities, warning that the State Government will no longer tolerate such shenanigans.

 

Okafor used the opportunity to visit the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force in Egbema Divisional Command, Sector Commander of Location, Ukwugba and the Sector Commander of the Eziorsu House Boat to familiarize and exchange correspondence with them as well as extend hands of partnership and collaboration to ensuring effective and robust Maritime surveillance in the state waterways.
