OKAFOR CONTINUES FAMILIARIZATION TOUR OF RIVERINE AREAS
•Visits Azara Egbelu, Malaysia Market
•Meets With Dredger Operators, Traders
The Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Marine Transportation, Waterways Security & Harbour Market, Prince Dr. Henry Okafor, on Friday (May 21st, 2021) continued tour of the state major riverine locations with visitations of Onukwu River in Azara Egbelu Emekuku in Owerri North LGA and Malaysia Market at the bank of Imo River in Obowo LGA where he interacted with local dredger operators and traders respectively.
Okafor informed the local dredger operators and sand miners that he had come, at the instance of the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Sen. Hope Uzodimma to obtain first hand information regarding the marine dredging activities on the Onukwu river, which he noted, were very rigorous and extensive, obviously leading to general habitat degradation and impacting negatively on the marine ecosystem around the channel.
Continuing, Okafor also observed that the forested river channel of the Onukwu could potentially provide a hideout and sanctuary for hoodlums and street urchins who could use the undercover location to stage various forms of criminality such as kidnapping, arm robbery, ritual killing, and other cult related activities, which the state government has zero tolerance for, stressing the need for sand miners, dredger operators and others who do legitimate businesses in that location to continue to be law abiding, sufficiently vigilant and patriotic enough to report strange faces or suspicious elements trespassing their business premises to law enforcement agents.
At the Malaysia Market, which is located at the Obowo section of the Imo River flood plain, Okafor received an SOS message from the leadership of the traders, who complained of recurring flood menace incidents associated with the yearly overflow of the river, which usually would result in destruction of their market wares worth millions of naira every year, requesting for the intervention of Imo State government via erection of flood barriers.
In his response, Okafor assured the authority of the market that he would deliver their message promptly and appropriately, expressing optimism that the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency Sen. Hope Uzodimma, which has come to better the lot of the generality of Imo people, would not forsake them at this time but instead do all within its power to put to an end to the ugly scenario.
Prince Dr. Henry Okafor was accompanied on the tour by some of his aides, Hon. Ameachi Adibuo, Chairman Imo State Marine & Waterways Surveillance Team and Mr. Kelvin Nwaka, Director Media & Publicity Imo Hope Restoration Movement, among others.
